Designing a Walk and Bike Friendly Community

Judi Wallace and Matthew Burczyk

Cities and towns were originally built with compact centers so people could easily walk to their desired destinations. With the advent of the trolley car followed by the private automobile, our city designs started changing to emphasize motor vehicles, often completely overlooking the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists. Now as we seek greener and more sustainable transportation, walking and bicycling can once again play an important role in our transportation.

6:08 CDI-Broadcast–30883: Have you seen the fluorescent flags for pedestrians in DC? there’s a bucket on each side of the road and peds can grab a flag to wave while they cross
    6:09 CDI-Broadcast–25615: great idea!
6:17 CDI-Broadcast–68705: Wow – never heard of that in DC – when did they do that?

6:21 CDI-Broadcast–30883: I think the DC thing was a neighborhood trend, maybe a neighborhood association sponsored? The rigs were mostly DIY with PVC and cable ties, but I see there is a commercial vendor http://pedflags.com/
6:22 CDI-Broadcast–30883: whatever the neighborhood east of Dupont Circle is
6:23 CDI-Broadcast–30883: These were just bright orange plastic sheets on dowel, and the PVC buckets on either side of the road are just attached to existing signs.
6:24 CDI-Broadcast–30883: http://sites.google.com/site/crossingflags/ to see the cheap version
6:30 CDI-Broadcast–87540: thanks I’ll let the group know

6:43 CDI-Broadcast–30883: Maybe we can ask the medical centers to take the lead on some of these ideas . . .
6:43 CDI-Broadcast–30883: sooo many employees live in Ardmore
6:48 CDI-Broadcast–30883: Will this broadcast be available afterward? My city councilperson, Dan Besse, would be interested, I think.
